Behind the Scenes: Animated Dung Beetle

INTRODUCTION

Howdy there, my title is Zack Ciminera, often known as Zacxophone. I stay in France, close to Annecy. I began doing 3D for enjoyable and to study one thing new in 2019. Since then, I’ve regularly made fashions and experimented with issues associated to 3D. In the present day, I make my very own animated fashions and promote them!

INSPIRATION

I primarily discover my inspiration in nature. I’ve all the time liked studying extra in regards to the existence of bugs, vegetation, and animals. I usually watch documentaries. For this beetle, I got here throughout a video on YouTube with very cool photographs exhibiting the lifetime of a dung beetle.

I used to be actually concerned about its lifestyle and hypnotized by its actions. So, I made a decision to attempt to reproduce it as faithfully as potential!

PROCESS

Like virtually all of my works, I do the textures with Substance Painter and every part else with Blender. For this beetle, I began from scratch, with just a few reference photos and movies of a sacred scarab.

MODELING

I began by roughly modeling the primary shapes of the beetle. As a result of I plan to animate it, I separated all of the components of it (legs, mandibles, head, physique, eyes, and many others.) to make it simpler to rig later.

SCULPTING

I’ve hardly ever sculpted in my earlier works, so I made a decision to apply a bit throughout this undertaking. I merely used Blender’s fundamental brushes with the Dyntopo possibility so as to add particulars associated to an actual beetle.

RETOPOLOGY

As soon as glad, I made a retopology of my sculpt. For this, I began with a aircraft and added subdivision, shrinkwrap, and mirror modifiers. Then, I created quads by hand till protecting my total mesh.

UV MAPPING

I utilized all of the earlier modifiers and positioned the seams. I unwrapped the entire mesh and reorganized the UVs by hand to cowl as a lot house as potential.

RIGGING

I rig my mesh earlier than texturing it. That method, I can put it in a extra pure place and regulate the completely different components if wanted. The rig is kind of easy; I add bones for all components of my scarab. For the legs, I add an IK modifier, then I symmetrize the entire rig. I exploit the automated weight possibility and readjust the burden of particular components within the weight paint mode.

TEXTURING

As soon as I export the low poly and excessive poly mesh from Blender, I import my low poly one into Substance painter and bake the Mesh maps (Regular, curvature, Ao and many others.) utilizing my excessive poly sculpted one. Then I add a number of layers for the essential colours, little particulars, dirts, and many others.

Within the meantime, I created the ball. Nothing particular to speak about; I simply positioned a dust texture on a sphere!

ANIMATION

As soon as my mannequin is prepared, I can begin the animation! My course of is kind of easy. I roughly animate the primary movement by including keyframes, then I constantly refine and polish it till I get one thing that satisfies me. I all the time begin with the looping animations (stroll and idle right here) then I create the transition between them. I additionally rigorously watch (and rewatch (and rewatch)) the video intimately to exactly reproduce the actions.

RENDER

As a result of I all the time have plenty of frames to render and do not wish to spend days computing my animations, I’ve taken the behavior of rendering my animations with Eevee. To get a pleasant render, I add movement blur, depth of subject, HDRI, and lights. However for nonetheless photographs I exploit Cycles as a result of it captures the realism I would like.
